Valtteri Bottas is back in Formula 1, this time with McLaren, taking part in a testing session at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. This marks his first on-track experience since leaving his full-time seat with Stake F1 at the end of the 2024 season.

A New Role as Reserve Driver

After parting ways with Stake, Bottas rejoined Mercedes as a reserve driver, supporting George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. His responsibilities go beyond just Mercedes, as he is also available to step in for McLaren and Williams, both powered by Mercedes engines.

Why Was Bottas Testing with McLaren?

As part of his new role, Bottas completed a familiarization test with McLaren, driving the 2023 MCL60. The goal? To get comfortable with the car, the systems, and the team’s protocols in case he needs to replace Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri during the season.

What This Means for F1

Bottas’ involvement highlights the crucial role of experienced reserve drivers in modern F1. His knowledge of Mercedes-powered cars and vast race experience make him a valuable asset for multiple teams. As the 2025 season unfolds, his readiness to jump in at any moment proves how interconnected F1 has become.
